Ian Murray MP Working Hard for Edinburgh South
I was delighted to join teachers last week from across Scotland at the Google Digital Garage in Edinburgh to take part in a Be Internet Legends teacher training workshop from Google and digital family experts Parent Zone.
Be Internet Legends is an exciting and engaging educational programme developed with experts, designed to help 7-11-year-olds be safe, confident explorers of the online world.
With accredited teaching resources, parent materials and assemblies, Be Internet Legends teaches children about five internet safety pillars designed to give them the skills and behaviours they need to have a positive time online: staying Sharp about what they share, being Alert to scams, keeping personal information Secure with strong passwords, being Kind to others and being Brave by talking to trusted adults when they come across anything they’re unsure about.
It was fantastic to see so many teachers engaged with this first-of-its-kind teacher training opportunity in Edinburgh, and it’s encouraging to hear that since its launch in 2018, 80% of Scottish Primary Schools have already engaged with Be Internet Legends, with 1627 primary school teachers having ordered a curriculum.
The team at Google and Parent Zone are continually developing the Be Internet Legends programme and are looking to reach even more pupils, teachers and families throughout 2019. If you would like to join the next ‘Train the Teacher’ workshop, register here and you will be notified when there is one planned in your area. It’s so encouraging to see teachers coming together to discuss internet safety and I’m pleased that Google and Parent Zone are leading the way on this important issue.
