Last week, Ed Miliband launched IPPR’s – an independent think tank -•Condition of Britain•report, arguing that Labour’s path to building a more equal and successful country is through big reforms – not big spending.

I’ve spoken to many young people in Edinburgh South•who’ve told me they are fed up with the lack of job opportunities under this government, and for that reason I’m backing these proposals.

The next Labour government will change the social security system so young people are in training, not on benefits. We•want to•support•them to get the•help they need to their improve skills instead of moving in and out of low-paid jobs and benefits. Too many young people in Edinburgh South•leave school without the qualifications they need to find decent work, setting them on a path of low-paid work and claiming benefits. This waste of potential is bad for our local community, bad for Britain and bad for young people themselves. We need a new social security system that people support and that supports people.

Whilst the Tories are celebrating the recovery, 850,000 young people are still unemployed and millions more are feeling the sharp end of the cost-of-living crisis.• The solution is to make our social security system fairer, and to give young people the skills they need to get a decent job and get ahead in life.

That’s why the next Labour government will equip young people with the skills and training they need to get a decent job and end entitlement to adult benefits for young people aged 18-21, unless they have good qualifications or work experience.• We’ll also reform the social security system so it’s fair and affordable by rewarding those that contribute throughout their lives, and hand power back to local communities so they can invest in bricks and mortar – instead of housing benefits.
