In the aftermath of theterrible attack on an elderly ladyin her own home recently, I want to reassure all my constituents that local police are taking all the necessary steps to ensure we continue to be safe in our community.

Whilst we should remember that incidents of this nature are extremely rare, taking small steps such as keeping doors and windows locked will help to prevent crimes like this happen again. Everyone in the local community, especially those in the Craiglea area of Morningside, need to be extra vigilant with keeping their house secure.

Chief Inspector Richard Horan, area commander for Edinburgh South, reiterated this advice yesterday and also reassured members of the community that patrols were being stepped up with extra uniformed officers out on the street. Police are also keen to provide home security advice to the public, covering both doorstep crime and home security advice.

He also praised the response of the public in the Morningside area, both in regards to their witness appeal and to officers who are speaking with them during their duties.

Detective Chief Inspector Keith Hardie, who is leading the investigation, said officers were keen to find a man aged between 18 and 30 who was seen by a neighbour in the doorway of the woman’s home at around 3.30pm.

He has urged anyone with information to come forward urgently.•Please call 101 if you have any information that might be of use to the police in their investigation.
