Scottish Questions

As we approach one month since the Scottish population turned out to vote decisively to stay within the United Kingdom, I wanted to highlight the positive steps that have been taken towards securing a devolution plan for Scotland. And so on Wednesday, I asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, for more information about this plan.

He highlighted that, despite attempts from the SNP to undermine the process of this programme for devolution, there is a clear schedule in place. As much as the nationalists brazenly suggest that the timetable for this plan is ‘broken’, it’s actually ahead of schedule -;the publication of the command paper on Monday was two and a half weeks earlier than its deadline.

Lord Smith of Kelvin has been placed in charge of overseeing this process, and will publish his proposals by the end of November. This will lead to the Government publishing draft clauses by the 25th January next year.

This is a clear timetable, with a clear objective -; to meet the sovereign will of the Scottish people.

Adjournment Debate -; UK Government’s relationship with Scotland

I also contributed to Gordon Brown’s Adjournment Debate on Scotland last Thursday 16th October.•

I took the opportunity to ask the Secretary of State for Scotland to acknowledge the Prime Minister’s clumsy statement after the referendum which wrongly attempted to pin further devolution for Scotland, alongside England’s constitutional debate.
