Work has begun on the new national supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh.
It will power research in a range of fields, from weather and climate forecasting to new drugs for cancer treatment.
Last year the Labour government committed £750m to the project.
The previous Conservative government promised funding numerous times but never actually put the money up.
The computational power it will have can be found in only a handful of other countries. It will be able to make a billion – billion calculations every second.
For a sense of the scale of that:
A million seconds is about 11.5 days. A billion seconds is about 32 years. To count to a billion-billion seconds, you would need to count continuously for 31.7 billion years, more than double the age of the universe.
It’s performing that number of calculations every second!
