Blackford Observatory
Blackford Observatory

As the local MP I get the pleasure of being a Trustee of the Royal Observatory Trust.

The Royal Observatory Edinburgh comprises the UK Astronomy Technology Centre of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, the Institute for Astronomy of the The University of Edinburgh and the ROE Visitor Centre. It also houses the new-ish Higgs Centre.

The world leading work that is done on our doorstep is currently providing the amazing images we are seeing from the NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

I visited a few years ago and was shown the starting parts to the new Moon project. It is now so well advanced that it’ll be heading to Chile shortly to be attached to one of the telescopes there. The pictures show the vast scale of some of the most advanced technology ever produced.

Edinburgh South is truly at the heart of the collaboration that is providing the current and future technologies for understanding the universe and beyond.

It’s little wonder the Open Doors day last year attached over 3,000 visitors. We should be extremely proud of what is on our doorstep over looking us all.

Thanks to all those who gave up their valuable time to update me on a great tour.
