This month (April 2024), RBS announced plans to close a fifth of their local branches across Scotland, including their branch on Bruntsfield Place.

I have been inundated with correspondence from constituents who are deeply disappointed by this decision. Of course, the nature of banking has changed over the years as online banking use has increased.

Nevertheless, local bank branches provide a lifeline for the elderly, those with mobility issues and people who do not have high levels of digital literacy. What is a cost-cutting exercise for RBS will lead to elderly customers being cut off from access to their local branch and left at a higher risk of fraud, as well as job losses at the branch.
