Ian Murray Working Hard for Edinburgh South
Making our economy and food market more sustainable is an objective that I fully support and feel very strongly about. That is why I attended the Edinburgh Local Food Network’s event in Morningside on Saturday to back the message that they are spreading.

The majority of food that we consume is produced by large, multi-national companies which has led to a decrease in the number of farms and a mass production ethos being picked up by suppliers. This requires a great deal of long distance transportation and the use of chemical pesticides to support the demand which is both damaging to the environment and the product.
•
By increasing the presence of local food in our day-to-day lives, we strengthen the connection we have with our food. We will have a better idea of where our food has come from and how it has been produced. Supporting local food projects also gives a great boost to our local farmers and businesses.

The event shed light on how possible a more sustainable market could be and how important the•Edinburgh Food Belt•would be to this.

Not acquiring your food from a supermarket may seem out of the ordinary and completely alien at first, but if you are interested you should definitely attend one of the•Edinburgh Local Food Network’s•events or visit their website,•http://www.edinburghfood.org/, to learn just how easily it can be done as it really is a great thing to do.
