Following a successful pilot in South Edinburgh, a consultation is now underway to help draw up plans for new 20mph speed limits in•Edinburgh’s City Centre, main shopping streets and residential areas.

There is a high level of support for 20mph speed limits amongst•the city’s•residents. Evidence shows that lower speeds reduce the risk and severity of road collisions and make people feel more•confident about being on their local streets.

Reducing traffic speed encourages more considerate driving and makes people feel•more confident about being in their local streets. This allows children and elderly people to travel independently and safely, and calmer roads make walking and cycling more attractive options for all. As a keen cyclist I welcome these measures as a way of encouraging more people to get out on their bikes.

The rollout of this programme is expected to begin in Autumn 2015 and Edinburgh City Council wants to hear your views on the proposals. There are a number of ways to do this:

20mph

  • Email your•views to•20mph@edinburgh.gov.uk
  • Fill in the•online questionnaire
  • Attend a drop-in event, public meeting or exhibition in your local area. The details of these•can be found on theCouncil’s website.

An interactive•map•of the proposals is now available and the consultation is open for residents to leave feedback until 17th October.
