Listed on popular travel website, Trip Advisor, are 155 Attractions in Edinburgh. In the top ten highest rated -; nestled among the Royal Botanic Gardens, Holyrood Park and Royal Yacht Britannia -; is a lesser known attraction, Gilmerton Cove.

Gilmerton Cove is a small underground maze of rooms and passageways, hidden below Gilmerton’s main streets. Despite passing it many times, I’d shamefully never taken the time to visit the attraction until last month, when the excellent tour guide Margaretanne showed us around.

What’s it for? Who made it? Where do the passageways ultimately lead?

I have my theories following the tour, but the fantastic thing about the cove is that no one has an authoritative solution to the mystery!

Supported by the Gilmerton Heritage Trust, I can heartily recommend it (and add my endorsement to the hundreds of reviews already online!). The tragedy is that too few people in Gilmerton and the surrounding area have even heard of the attraction, and too few have visited.
