I was very pleased to meet Mr Hafeez ur Rehman recently, a senior member of Edinburgh’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, who came to tell me about their United Against Extremism campaign, which has had posters displayed on buses in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee in recent weeks.

This is a campaign that I am proud to support. The recent publicity drive has happened in the wake of the shocking murder of Asad Shah, a member of the Ahmadi Community, who was killed by a Muslim man accusing him of having ‘disrespected’ Islam. Asad Shah was a well-known and popular shopkeeper in his local area of Shawlands, Glasgow.

The mark of a decent society is how we treat the people we live beside. •We must stand in solidarity against all forms of extremism, and root out views that aim to undermine the way of life that we all value. •We must also stand in solidarity with all those affected by the abhorrence of terrorism. •Efforts to spread discrimination and hate will not succeed if we stand together and that is why this campaign is so important.

This campaign has already had a strong impact, bringing together people of all faiths and none to condemn extremism. I congratulate the Ahmadiyya Community on this success.
