I was lucky enough to be shown round the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh by their Centre Manager Karen Traill and Director Prof. David Tollervey.

It was fascinating to see the cutting edge research into cell function and genetics that is being carried out right here in Edinburgh. I was also happy to see the result of the extensive investment in Scotland from the Welcome Trust; I know that their financial support is crucial to the continuation, and indeed the improvement, of the research facilities that we depend upon.

The Centre is currently producing beautiful artworks made of glass that demonstrate views from the microscope, such as cell division and attacks from bacteriophage, in a striking and memorable way. This is part of their ongoing efforts to educate the public about their work in new and fun ways. There will be a display of these interesting pieces from the 24th to the 28th of August at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh.
