Ian Murray Working Hard for Edinburgh South
Cyrenians has a long, proud history of helping vulnerable and homeless people on the edge of society. I visited them this month to discuss the Government’s multi-faceted welfare reform strategy and how the organisation is coping with the effects.• I heard from their service users who have had a variety of problems with the Department of Work and Pensions.
I know from my caseload that the Government’s attempts to transfer people from Disability Living Allowance to Personal Independence Payments (PIP) is a disaster. Many of my constituents are having their benefits reduced and losing access to their Motability car. The inability to access transport leads to people becoming housebound and has a deleterious effect on both mental and physical health. •
This month I have also written about the Government’s attempt to narrow the criteria for PIP to exclude people with mental health conditions. You can read more here:
A huge thanks to everyone from Cyrenians who welcomed me. A truly fantastic organisation.•
