In celebration of my late colleague, Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common, I attended a ‘Great Get Together’ event, hosted by the Scottish Fabians.

It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends. As the prime minister said, when she remarked on Jo’s death in her New Year’s message: 2017 represents an opportunity to move forward and “bring this country together, as never before”.

This is a fantastic initiative and I would encourage everyone to get involved next year. •Thanks to the Fabians for organising and to Brendan Cox for setting up the initiative.

The House of Commons has a tradition of installing a family shield for those members who have been killed in office.• At the end of June, a shield, designed by the children of Jo Cox, was unveiled close to where Jo stood to make her maiden speech.
