Boris Johnson has given an interview to Radio 4’s World at One in which he argued that “disaggregating” the existing Withdrawal Agreement to replace the existing backstop arrangements with supposed “alternative arrangements” is a viable strategy to deliver Brexit.

Commenting, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“Boris Johnson has a notoriously flexible relationship with the truth, and the same applies to his approach to Brexit. He claims the EU will be willing to rip up the existing backstop provision in the withdrawal agreement and replace it with non-existent ‘alternative arrangements’. If the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, then this proposal is the craziest of all.

“The EU has already made it crystal clear that the current extension was granted on condition that there would be no effort to change the Withdrawal Agreement. It is not going to tear up it up for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, or any other Prime Minister for that matter. We know this because the theory has already been tested to destruction. Theresa May already tried banging her head repeatedly against this particular brick wall. The wall remained intact but her premiership was destroyed.

“In reality, Boris Johnson is leading the country towards a destructive No Deal that was barely mentioned three years ago and for which there is no democratic mandate. The only way to deliver a lasting and stable solution to this Brexit crisis is to give the public the final say. That’s why the People’s Vote campaign will be organising rallies across the country through the summer, ending with a huge march on October 12th though London. It’s time for the people to be heard.”
