Murray – Evidence that Northern Ireland faces Brexit carve up mounting

The Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has said today (Friday) that his government is considering proposals for a border for food and animals across the Irish Sea even if the UK crashes out of the EU with a destructive No Deal.

The Irish prime minister’s comments come after increased speculation that Conservative leadership contenders Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt will seek a Northern Ireland-only backstop as a way of sealing the deal with the EU.

Commenting, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“The evidence that an economic border in the Irish Sea, with or without a Northern Ireland-only backstop, is very firmly on the table is mounting up.

“With the EU insisting on a backstop to keep the Irish border open, and Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt determined to avoid a UK-wide backstop, there is a real risk of just such a Northern Ireland-only carve off.

“Such an outcome has no democratic legitimacy and nobody in Northern Ireland, beyond the 500 or so Conservative members living there, gets any say on the matter.

“Both Johnson and Hunt have failed to be honest about the Irish border question and neither can claim legitimacy for their Brexit policy when the people have been given no say.

“That is an outrage against democracy and one more reason why we absolutely must have a People’s Vote on the outcome of the Brexit mess.”
