Commenting on the outcome of the Letwin amendment vote, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“This decision by MPs to reject Boris Johnson’s efforts to bounce them into backing his hard Brexit proposal means he must now obey the law and seek the time needed to solve the crisis he has done so much to create.
“He does not have – and cannot claim – the support of Parliament for these proposals. Nor does he have any right to crash the UK out of the EU on October 31 without the permission of Parliament or the people.
“Parliament will use that time to consider attaching a Brexit deal to a confirmatory referendum and there are a growing number of MPs inside Parliament as well as a million people protesting outside who know this is the only way to end the chaos once and for all.
“In the days to come, the real impact this terrible Brexit proposal will have on jobs, living standards, our public services, and the peace process in Northern Ireland will be clearly exposed.
“We are encouraging everyone on our march – the people – to send a message to the powerful. The People’s Vote campaign has an open letter to the Prime Minister, every MP, MEP and the European Council asking them not to turn their backs on us now.
